Car thieves busier at end of week Two days out stealing Car thieves are most active on Fridays and Saturdays in greater Auckland - and they mostly target hatchback Mazdas.
Police statistics show 5328 cars were stolen in the Auckland region last year - about 100 cars a week, or 15 a day.
Over 12 months, 875 cars were stolen on Fridays and 816 on Saturdays. The remaining 3637 cars disappeared on the other five days of the week.
Car industry newsletter autofile said the most popular model among thieves was the Mazda 323 or Familia - 650 went walkabout in 1999.
After that came 406 Ford Lasers, 298 Ford Telstars, 273 Subaru Legacys, and 178 Toyota Corollas.
