Two people have been critically injured following a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near Winton, Southland.
A police spokesperson said the crash on Thomsons Crossing on Winton Lorneville Highway occurred about 5.40pm.
“Two people have been critically injured, and a further four have sustained minor injuries.
“The road is currently closed and diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.”
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said SH6 was closed between Lochiel Bridge Rd and Gap Rd because of a serious crash.
The Serious Crash Unit will be attending and there will be a traffic detour via Gap Rd West, Winton Substation Rd and Lochiel Bridge Rd.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 4.50pm.
