It's only 20 kilometres long and three kilometres wide, but two cars on Matakana Island managed to crash into each other early this morning.
St John Ambulance responders on the island were first on the scene and called out the Rotorua Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter to get two men to Tauranga Hospital.
A 34-year-old has lower leg injuries and a 49-year-old has neck and chest injuries.
Police attending had to call out the ferry's after hours service to get there.
The island, off the Tauranga coast, has a population of around 250.
