A 23-year-old Auckland man is fighting for his life and another is seriously injured after a street fight involving about a dozen young people.
The fight, which is believed to have involved baseball bats, started about 10.30 on Saturday night outside a house on Morrie Laing Ave in Mt Roskill.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said two groups of young men were involved, one made up of what appears to have been local youths.
It is not known where the second group came from but two men from the local group were badly injured.
When police arrived they found a man lying unconscious on the road with head and body injuries. Mr Whitley said it was not known if the 23-year-old, who was in Auckland Hospital, would survive.
The second injured man was in a stable condition last night.
Police are still trying to establish what provoked the attack but Mr Whitley said there was nothing to suggest that it was ethnically or gang related.
Residents of Morrie Laing Ave say there is no significant history of violence or gangs in the street but young people have been known to gather at night.
People with information about the attack or the second group should contact Avondale police on 820 5700.
