A young woman is dead after a car careered off Auckland's Southern Motorway and ploughed into a house early today.
Two other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital and two others escaped with minor injuries in the crash at Manurewa around 3.20am.
Police said that witnesses reported that the car passed them on the motorway travelling at high speed before losing control and crashing through the garage of a house finishing up close to a bedroom.
Fortunately the house was unoccupied or more people could have been killed or injured.
No other vehicle was believed involved in the accident.
Police closed the motorway and diverted traffic while a crash team investigated the incident.
Also on SH1, in East Tamaki, two people were trapped in their vehicle after their car flipped and landed on its roof in the middle lane.
Police said their injuries were non-life threatening.
No further details were yet available.
