Two people were airlifted to hospital after a car with a trailer went over a bank on the Desert Road in the central North Island.
An ambulance communications spokesman said emergency services were notified shortly after 3pm to the crash on State Highway 1, 20km north of Waiouru.
Two people had to be freed from the car by the Fire Service before they were airlifted to Wanganui Hospital.
One person had serious abdominal injuries and the second had moderate wrist injuries.
The Desert Road was closed for a time before reopening to one lane later this afternoon.
