KEY POINTS:
Two people are being treated in hospital this morning after a utility vehicle towing a large caravan crashed on the West Coast of the South Island this morning.
Police communications Inspector Michael Coulter said the ute towing a caravan collided with a tree about 5.30am on State Highway 7 at Maruia, about 20km from Springs Junction, which is 66km south-west of Murchison.
A man and a woman were being treated at Christchurch Hospital for moderate injuries, he said.
The road had been closed for a short time this morning while the vehicles were removed.
Police communications Inspector Alan Weston said earlier this morning the people had been trapped.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, he said.
