The Paine family from Masterton captured two of the titles at the annual primary schools' cross-country races hosted by Athletics Masterton at the Sports Bowl last Saturday.
Kurtis Paine, representing Douglas Park, clocked 8min 33secs in winning the junior boys event over 2km. Second of the 72 participants was Alex Priest of Martinborough with Bradley Annear of Douglas Park third. The teams event - judged on the first four placegetters in each team - was a thriller with Carterton taking the honours with 47pts, followed by Douglas Park 48 and Masterton Primary 93.
Stevie Paine, who attends Masterton Intermediate, celebrated her selection as Wairarapa Junior Sports Personality for 2006-07 with a clear-cut victory in the senior girls (form one and two)race over 2.2km. Her time was 9mins 25secs. Runner-up was Kahu Brown of Greytown and Molly Creagh of Lakeview was third. Masterton Intermediate took the teams title with 23pts, followed by Martinborough 44pts and Greytown 45pts.
The junior girls race attracted 76 starters and was meant to be over two laps but mistakenly was held over just one (1.1km). It was won by Holly Travers of Hadlow in 5mins 18secs, ahead of Annaliese Campbell of Greytown and Katherine Williams of St Patricks.
The teams event produced a close finish with St Patricks (44pts) edging out Hadlow (46pts) and third was Carterton (58pts).
The senior boys race was won by Shai Te Tau of Lakeview in 9mins 36secs with Greytown duo William Cowper and Heta Phillips finished second and third respectively. Masterton Intermediate won the teams event with 37pts, followed by Carterton 42pts and Greytown 45pts.
