A 12-year-old driver is "damn lucky" he didn't crash after being clocked at speeds of more than 140km/h on a state highway.
The young age of the driver shocked police who say they did not set off in pursuit for fear of what being chased might cause the youngster to do.
Senior Sergeant Graeme Hill of Tokoroa police said a call was received from the Tokoroa boy's mother about 1.30am yesterday to say her car had been stolen.
The 12-year-old and two passengers - another 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy from Tokoroa - travelled the 40km round trip to Putaruru and back to Tokoroa, apparently to see a girlfriend.
The 12-year-old drove the car most of the way with the 15-year-old allegedly taking over when they arrived back in Tokoroa.
