Twelve arrests after operation targets organised crime in Manawatu

Police have arrested 12 people in the Manawatu today after executing search warrants across the region, and more are expected.

Central District field crime manager Detective Ross McKay said today signalled the finalisation of the 10 month-long project, Operation Crust.

Police focused their efforts on a number of people in Feilding who were contributing to criminal activity in Manawatu.

He said police executed multiple search warrants and as a result, the alleged offenders now face a range of charges including possession and distribution of methamphetamine, possession of firearms and stolen property, money laundering and burglary.

The individuals, ranging in age and background, will be appearing in the Palmerston North District Court today and tomorrow.

"Operation Crust was an innovative approach to a problem, aimed at preventing future harm in the community allegedly inflicted by these individuals and their associates," Detective McKay said. "Feilding is a close-knit and supportive community and the impact of this operation will be felt across the Manawatu."

He said a process to restrain assets was also underway.

"Police Liaison Officers will be working with the families of those involved moving forward. Police staff have worked relentlessly on this operation, using a unique approach to end a cycle of reoffending.

"This operation serves as a reminder of the ambitious targets Police has set and intends to achieve. As well as reducing reoffending, Police aims to reduce serious crime victimisations by 10,000 by 2021."
