Dick Smith Electronics is recalling more than 800 DSE TV sets because of a safety oversight that could lead to the sets overheating.
General manager Stu Meadows said the company had had no reports of any problems, but it was important for affected 51cm sets not to be used until they were checked.
"In some sets an internal wire running to the right-hand speaker may be lying across the mains section of the printed circuit board.
"If the wire heats up, there's going to be some smoke." The most likely effect would be the speaker shorting out. The risk of fire was minor, he said
The wire was not double-insulated and therefore did not meet New Zealand safety standards.
The company says the flat and standard-screen TVs - models G5178 and G5179 - have been on sale nationwide since June, with an estimated 817 sold.
Mr Meadows urged customers to respond to the recall notice scheduled for today. People with the TV models should call 0800 373 347 for a replacement set or a visit from a technician.
