The Government yesterday announced a national recycling scheme aimed at diverting 500,000 televisions from landfills to recycling stations.
The move comes as televisions in Hawkes Bay and the West Coast were the first to make the switch to digital at the weekend. The TV TakeBack programme, supported by the Government's Waste Minimisation Fund, will be rolled out around the country as each region goes digital.
Digital TV promises better picture and sound quality, more channels and other features such as on-screen TV guides. Eighty-six per cent of New Zealanders have already converted to digital television.
TVs which have not switched to digital in Hawkes Bay and the West Coast will today show only static.
