TVNZ's desperate quest for ratings is one of the main reasons it is losing viewers, according to one media commentator.
The state-owned network has dropped 60 staff this week, mostly from its news and current affairs operation, whose shows have historically pulled in the biggest audiences.
Former broadcaster Brian Edwards said the operation has completely lost its way.
He said the crucial six o'clock evening news is a prime example of what has gone wrong.
Brian Edwards said the TVNZ programme is often sensationalised, when it should be driven by solid news values.
He added that TVNZ should be seeking more senior newsreaders who have the 'gravitas' to present news to viewers in an authoritative and believable manner.
