SYDNEY - The boyfriend of Australia's Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson has been granted bail by a Sydney court, but will have to deposit a A$100,000 ($113,000) surety after being charged with a A$7.3 million loan fraud.
Dawson is a New Zealander.
Matthew John Rhodin, 42, of Rushcutters Bay, today appeared at Sydney's Central Local Court charged with two counts of using a false instrument with intent and one of making a false statement to obtain money.
He has pleaded not guilty to the three charges.
Dressed in jeans and a long grey t-shirt, with the words "Morning Glory" written across it, Rhodin instructed his lawyer to apply for bail.
In granting bail, Magistrate Jane Culver imposed strict conditions ordering Rhodin to report to Kings Cross police station twice a day, surrender his passport and provide A$100,000 surety to be lodged for bail.
Officers arrested Rhodin at his luxury Rushcutters Bay apartment at 7am yesterday.
Police allege he used a phantom lease and property valuation to obtain a loan for a commercial property at Darlinghurst last year, before defaulting on the loan.
Rhodin's lawyer, Ben Clark, told the court his client "intends to vigorously fight the matter", but was not in a position to deposit the required surety.
The magistrate said the police facts revealed "considerable sums of money were involved" in the alleged frauds, including an independent valuation of a A$10.5 million property.
"There are some features ... which would suggest this man is a possible flight risk," Culver told the court.
Rhodin is required to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on December 11.
