TWO old rivals battled it out for honours in the weekend's Gladstone Cliff-Hanger motorcycle hillclimb.
And in the end it was Warren Turner's older, smaller-engined 1999 Yamaha R6 that prevailed over the grunt of Tony Sampson's new Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Turner set a course record of 2:13.254s for the 6.7km course, taking the King of the Cliff-Hanger trophy home for the second year in a row. Sampson finished on 2:18.345s.
Turner, from Palmerston North, is an Isle of Man veteran who now limits himself to one event a year, the Cliff-Hanger. He had problems on Saturday, eventually tracing it to race fuel that had gone off.
Club spokesman Peter Thompson said there were about 20 entries both days. Conditions were brilliant on Saturday, when riders got seven or eight runs each on a short course. On Sunday only two runs were possible as showers made conditions slippery at the top of the course, 1000ft above the startline.
"The fast guys were riding right on the edge, and it would have been too dangerous to continue," Thompson said. "And anyway, the Cliff-Hanger is essentially a fun event."
