The family of a man who accidentally shot his daughter's boyfriend while hunting with him near Napier this year has started a trust to help give life skills to young people.
Garth Porter, 54, was sentenced to home detention and community work in Napier District Court on Tuesday after shooting 18-year-old Aron Timms, while out hunting with him between Napier and Taupo in March.
The court was told Porter mistook Mr Timms for a deer.
After the sentencing the family disclosed the formation of the Aron Timms Memorial Trust, Hawke's Bay Today newspaper reported.
A family statement said Mr Timms was "a much-loved and respected member of our family, being our daughter Nicole's boyfriend of the last three years.
"He was also a good friend and hunting buddy of both Garth and Richard (the third hunter and boyfriend of another daughter).
"Aron was a great guy with a great sense of humour. We are all devastated by the loss of Aron through this hunting tragedy and continue to struggle daily with our grief.
The statement said Porter was "overwhelmed by guilt, sadness and remorse for the Timms family" as he was for Nicole.
It said the trust was initiated out of the love of the outdoors shared by family members.
"This trust will help youth gain life skills through experiencing the outdoors through Outward Bound, the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre or the Spirit of New Zealand."
