State Highway 1 given all clear after chemical spill
A stretch of road on State Highway 1 has been given the all clear by emergency services after being closed for nearly three hours due to a chemical spill.
A truck carrying chemicals including the poison 1080 spilt its cargo about 5km north of Taihape about 8am today.
Emergency services closed the road, diverting all traffic while the exact mix of chemicals was established.
Police communications spokesman Inspector Steve Darroch said emergency services had treated the spill with extreme caution while the exact nature of the chemical mix was established.
However, it had been confirmed there was no danger posed by the spillage, and the road was due to reopen shortly, once the site had been completely cleared.
The truck was the second one to lose its load on SH1 near Taihape today.
Early this morning a truckload of lawnmowers spilt, and closed one lane of the highway for a period.
