Plans by the national rail company, Tranz Rail, to carry logs by road have aroused Government concern.
Transport Minister Mark Gosche told Parliament yesterday that he had met timber companies to discuss the issue and was due to meet Tranz Rail again this month to discuss the matter further.
Green MP Sue Kedgley said Tranz Rail's new "intermodal transformation project" aimed to shed staff, facilities and infrastructure in favour of trucking.
