Truck drivers are being urged to report accident black spots and roads that need more funding, or more rest stops.
A new initiative launched in Auckland today called on the country's 28,000 truck drivers to help out with road safety.
The Blackspots and Reststops Register was launched by New Zealand's first dedicated truck insurance specialist NTI, which said it was part of its focus on practical ways of improving road safety.
It would provide a 24/7 free-call and on-line reporting system, said chief executive, Wayne Patterson.
He said the register provided a simple reporting mechanism that encouraged truck drivers to register blackspots and sites where fatigue could be an issue.
The data would be passed on to the Government.
Mr Patterson said a similar initiative had been successful in Australia. The company had collated key information from Australian truck drivers on dangerous black spots and had proposed sites for more rest stops.
He said no one knew New Zealand highways better than the thousands of professional drivers who used the roads every day.
Drivers should telephone their worst black spots and suggested rest spots to 0508 007 046, register at www.blackspots.co.nz or email help@blackspots.co.nz
