Police have called off a search for a missing 35-year-old Hamilton truck driver his mother suspects may have been a victim of foul play.
Father-of-one Nicholas "Tommy" Atkins has not been seen since walking out of his suburban Fairview Downs home early last Saturday morning.
Family members found items of Mr Atkins' clothing on the banks of the Waikato River on Thursday but a police search found nothing and the search has now been called off.
Police were keeping an open mind on what happened.
His mother said vanishing without a trace was "totally out of character". "He's
got a beautiful son and a new job that he loves ... he'd just started to save for a house ... I don't know, maybe he was lonely.
