Truck-trailer crash blocks gorge

A truck and trailer unit overturned about 12.30pm today blocking State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge.

The trailer unit appeared to have left the road causing the entire unit to jack knife, Inspector Scott Webb of the police northern communications centre said.

The crash happened at Waikino, about 7km southwest of Waihi, in the Hauraki district.

Mr Webb reported about 2.30pm that heavy salvage units were on the way to the scene to clear the area as quickly as possible.

Traffic was being diverted in the Paeroa and Waihi areas.

The driver of the truck was shaken, but uninjured.
