Traffic has been backed up for more than four hours after a truck carrying methanol rolled on the Napier-Taupo highway.
Police central communications Sergeant Guy Callahan said police received a call regarding the crash at 6.50am.
Northern fire communications shift manager Steve Smith said a HAZMAT unit had been sent to the site to contain the spill on State Highway 5 and had since left the scene.
A recovery crew had also attended, he said.
"They had to get a big crane to right the truck again. Obviously [there's] no spill at this stage.
