Truck hits bridge near Matamata

State Highway 27 is closed near Matamata in Waikato after a truck collided with a bridge.

The collision happened around 8am and the driver, who suffered head injuries, has been taken to hospital.

The bridge, known as kneebones bridge, was 5km south of Matamata.

The road was likely to be closed for some hours while the truck was removed and the road cleared of diesel, police said.

The truck was carrying empty chicken cages.

Diversions are in place.
