KEY POINTS:
Firefighters were this morning dampening down a truck fire in Wellington's Interislander ferry terminal following fears hazardous chemicals could have ignited.
Fire Service Wellington communications shift manager Chris Dalton said fire started about 6.30am in a truck and trailer unit in the marshalling yards.
Initial reports were that there were chemicals aboard the truck, he said.
However, the chemicals were in the rear of the truck and were not on fire. The truck's contents were unloaded to allow firefighters to get to the fire.
It was not clear what was actually burning, he said.
Mr Dalton said police were at one stage thinking of closing the nearby motorway because of smoke danger, but that was not needed.
Three appliances, a breathing apparatus tender and command unit remained were still at the scene at 8.15am.
Ferry sailings were reported to be unaffected.
