Truck engine explosion closes State Highway 1

State Highway 1 was closed near Hunterville today after a truck's engine exploded and leaked oil over the road.

The explosion happened just north of the Hunterville golf club, a Marton police spokesman told NZPA.

The situation was very dangerous because of the large amount of oil that spilled on the road.

A roading contractor may be called in to put sand on the road to dilute the oil, he said.

Fire engines were attending the incident.

The condition of the truck driver was not known.
