An Auckland truck driver has been offered trauma counselling after he ran down and killed a pedestrian who walked in front of his truck on the southern motorway yesterday.
Police said there was nothing suspicious about the death of the 47-year-old unemployed man, and he did not appear to have been drinking or taking drugs.
"All we can say is he walked onto the motorway into the face of a truck and trailer unit," said Senior Sergeant Dave Ryan from the Auckland motorway police.
He said the truck driver was not to blame, and he was finding it hard to deal with the incident.
The name of the dead man, who came from Manurewa in south Auckland, would not be released.
He died when he was hit by the truck and trailer unit at the Te Irirangi Drive overbridge near Manukau shortly after 1pm.
