KEY POINTS:
A notorious stretch of State Highway 1 south of Taihape remains closed after a fatal two-truck crash, early this morning.
One driver was killed and another hospitalised after their large B-train trucks collided on a sharp bend near Ohingaiti, Rangitikei about 2am.
A crane has been brought in to clear the wreckage, which is blocking the highway.
Rangitikei MP Simon Power said Transit had reassured him it would improve the section of road.
Mr Power said the upgrade would start in the next few weeks, with major earthworks beginning at the end of the year.
He said he would make sure the work was done as quickly and effectively as possible.
The injured driver was taken to Palmerston North Hospital and was said to be in a stable condition.
A police serious crash unit was investigating.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area if possible.
