A truck driver is dead after his vehicle left the road and the cab was crushed by his cargo of logs early today.
The incident happened on an arterial forestry road in the Kaingaroa Forest, Bay of Plenty, Inspector Kerry Watson of the police northern communications centre said.
The logging truck had left the forestry road, between Murupara and Taupo, about 5.06am.
Emergency services tried to free the driver but he had not survived.
Traffic police from Taupo were investigating at the scene and heavy lifting equipment was being used to clear it.
However, the incident was unlikely to cause any traffic delays due to its location on a forestry road.
Taupo police said more details would be released later.
