KEY POINTS:
A truck driver has been charged over a crash which killed a top policeman as he cycled home from work.
Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald, national manager of the police's communications centres, died on The Esplanade at Petone about 5.25pm on June 19.
A 45-year-old truck driver has now been charged with careless driving causing death.
He has been summonsed to appear in Lower Hutt District Court on January 20.
Lower Hutt police area commander Inspector Richard Chambers said the information had been laid now that the investigation into the crash had been completed.
Mr Chambers said Mr Fitzgerald's family had been advised of the prosecution decision.
As the case was now before the court, police would not be making any further comment.
Mr Fitzgerald, 57, became known internationally for his role in running New Zealand's road policing for five years prior to his job at the communication centres.
