A crash between two trucks early this morning has closed State Highway One north of Mangaweka in the central North Island.
The collision happened just before 2am and completely blocked the road, say police. A crane will be used to remove the wreckage.
The occupants of the trucks received minor injuries.
The Fire Service hazardous chemicals unit is clearing diesel and solvent which spilled from the trucks on to the road.
The road is expected to be closed until around midday to allow time for the clean-up.
Diversions are in place through Toe Toe Road, but police say this route may be unsuitable for some heavy vehicles.
Motorists may wish to delay their travel through this area or consider travelling via State Highways 3 and 4 (Whanganui and Raetihi) to avoid delays on State Highway One, say police.
