A serious crash at Whenuapai blocked State Highway 16 this morning.
Police said a large truck and trailer unit collided head-on with a 4WD. Two others cars were also involved in the crash, with one vehicle flipped onto its roof.
Inspector Darroch Todd said: "A vehicle turning right into a driveway was struck by another vehicle. This vehicle in turn was hit by a large articulated 38 tonne lorry, which was then struck by another vehicle."
A man cut from his over-turned vehicle received a minor head wound. Two people from another vehicle had minor injuries and were taken to hospital for monitoring.
Mr Todd added: "The crash scene was described as carnage by attending staff who were very surprised that there were not more serious injuries."
Police were informed of the crash, near Brigham Creek Road, at about 6.45am.
Traffic was being diverted down Taupaki Road and motorists were advised to avoid using State Highway 16 between Kumeu and West Harbour. The road was re-opened later.
