The future of Rotorua's troubled Sunset Junior High School remains uncertain following the resignation of its commissioner and the appointment of another.
Te Ururoa Flavell has resigned as commissioner because of his commitments as the Waiariki candidate for the Maori Party.
He also said he had other work commitments as an education consultant.
He is to be replaced by Hamilton-based educational consultant Geoff Mooar.
Mr Mooar was principal of Rotorua's Western Heights Primary School from 1987 to 1990 before becoming principal at Hamilton's Maeroa Intermediate from 1990 to 2000.
His role is to fulfil the functions, powers and duties of the board.
Mr Flavell was appointed commissioner by the Ministry of Education in December last year, following the resignation of four board members. Part of his job had been to investigate the school's future because of concerns about the falling roll.
The roll has this year dropped to 56 and there are nine staff who work either part-time or full-time.
Mr Flavell chaired a series of public meetings at the school and met with staff earlier this year. He is still to complete a report for the ministry recommending the future direction of the middle school.
