There was a large turnout of players last Saturday at Carterton with the men playing round two of the Springhill Trophy and the women playing for the Stubbs Cup and the Captain's Trophy, a homelinks event.
MEN - SATURDAY:
The Springhill Trophy is a best two of three stroke rounds event and the best nett score of the day was posted by Peter Mallitte, who won the higher handicap division with his nett 68.
Second in that division was Ralph Day whose nett 72 was matched by Eric Behringer, Ralph getting the nod on countback.
Ian Gordon was on his own on 74 as was Dean Schaef on 75.
The low handicap division was won by David Sadler with his nett 69.
David Ross was second with a nett 70 and Nigel Bain, third, with 71.
Four players - John Lett, Jeremy Ross, Stu Ingham and Tim Druzianic - all returned nett 72's and were placed as stated on countback.
Kevin Hooper played the most accurate shot to win the Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin competition.
The "All Teed Up" ball for men was won by Pat Carew while four men - Peter Mallitte, Mat Casey, Tim Druzianic and Jason Paku - all scored holes in two with Jason achieving two of them.
WOMEN - SATURDAY:
In the Stubbs Cup and Captain's Trophy round the bronze division players showed the way with Alison Murrell's 35 point score taking pride of place.
Bev Tregurtha was just one point adrift with Anne Brewer, on 33, in third place.
Chris Taylor's 32 points and June Prince's 31 rounded out the bronze division prize winners.
The silver division was won by Corrie van Zanten with 33 points from Nadine Jansen, on 31, with Barbara Birchall, on 30 points, third on countback.
A visitor from the Masterton Golf Club, Lesley Roberts, won the women's Nearest the Pin contest.
VETERANS - TUESDAY:
The veterans group played the third round of the Autumn Cup on Tuesday, May 10, with very fierce competition at the head of the field.
Bob Walker won the day but only by lot from both Nigel Graham and Pat Carew with all three players scoring a mere 41 points!
John Lett filled fourth slot with his 38 point score edging out Bill Armstrong, also by lot.
At the beginning of play Veterans Captain, Ray White, announced that there would be no nearest the pin contest but that there would be a hole in two prize. He also said that, if there was more than one player who scored a hole in two, the issue would be decided by a card draw.
It was just as well that Ray did that because, when all of the cards were in, there were no less than seven players who scored a hole in two!
Pat Carew took the honours in the card draw.
FOOTNOTE:
Readers may have noticed that the Carterton golf report has been missing from the last three week's Times Ages.
The reason was a major computer gremlin which has taken some time to put right.
Hopefully things are now put to rights and the report will be a regular feature once again.
On a lighter note, last Saturday in the clubhouse at the conclusion of play, the weekly members' draw took place.
Peter Mallitte, as the day's best scorer, was invited to draw a marble out of the hundreds in the barrel.
Of course you've guessed what he did. He drew his own marble to win some 15 vouchers and really make his day!
There are some days on which it seems one can not win and others - perhaps less frequent - when it seems impossible to lose. Peter got the mixture just right last Saturday!
