A series of "miraculous" events led to three young men surviving after the ute they were travelling in plunged down a 300m bank.
The trio's vehicle went off Summit Rd, near Little Akaloa on the Banks Peninsula about 2.30pm yesterday. It rolled and flipped at least eight times, and ended up at the bottom of a ravine, Constable Jeremy Hopson said.
"Someone was looking down on them, it's an absolute miracle. It was a mess - I was on all fours climbing back up - it was so steep."
They then crawled out of the vehicle, up the bank and flagged down the only vehicle driving past - which happened to be a doctor from Dunedin, Mr Hopson said.
