Three men are facing charges after an altercation in central Rotorua today in which another man was cut in the head with a tomahawk-like axe.
The trio were caught after a fight began at 10am in the centre city today, Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Lynch told NZPA.
"Details are sketchy but a small hatchet-like weapon was used in the fight.
"It could be a small tomahawk that was used to wound a man in the head."
The man was treated by emergency services and taken to hospital for further treatment.
Police could not say what the exact charges were at this stage.
Inquiries were continuing.
