KEY POINTS:
The New Mini is really pumpin' ... diesel this time. For the first time, BMW New Zealand is offering diesel-powered versions of its trendy Mini. The company claims the new Cooper D models boast fuel efficiency to rival hybrid cars.
The Mini Cooper D hatchback returns an average of 4.4 litres per 100km, while the Clubman version consumes 4.5 litres. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine makes 80kW/240Nm, while an overboost function of the variable-vane turbocharger can increase torque to 260Nm for short periods.
Pricing starts at $39,900 for the hatch, or $44,900 for the Clubman. You might have to drive a way to really feel the financial benefits: the diesels cost $4000 more than their petrol-powered equivalents.
