A couple of small tremors felt on Waiheke Island could be a sign of things to come.
The earthquakes measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale hit about 30 kilometres east of Auckland last night and again today.
Seismologist Ken Gledhill says local earthquakes only happen about once a decade in Auckland and these ones are very small, but he says they are centred just outside the Auckland volcanic field, so there is a small chance it could be the start of something happening.
Dr Gledhill says all scientists can do at this stage is keep a close watch on the situation.
