The dramatic toppling of a giant Featherston gum was the kiss of death for a pair of nearby trees.
On May 23 high winds brought down a gum tree onto Underhill Rd in the town, cutting power to 700 homes.
Yesterday, its two immediate neighbours, towering at up to 40m in height, were next for the chop, as a precautionary measure.
Helen McNaught, South Wairarapa District Council's amenities manager, said the toppling of the first tree undermined the other two.
Both were precariously close to power lines and the house on the property, near the Barr-Brown Reserve.
