KEY POINTS:
Contractors had an early callout in Dunedin this morning when a large macrocarpa tree toppled over into a street and crushed a car.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the tree had completely blocked Malvern Rd in the suburb of Glenleith and contractors were working through the morning to clear it.
He said unfortunately a "lowered and sporty looking" BMW was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was so swamped by the tree it could barely be seen underneath it.
"It was certainly the highlight of our night, but probably not for the person who owns it," Mr Aitken said.
He said there appeared to be no wind or any other obvious reason for the tree falling.
