KEY POINTS:
Treacherous conditions have led to a large number of accidents in Dunedin this morning.
Police said steady rain after a long dry spell had made roads dangerous and warned that drivers were not driving to the conditions.
A two car crash in Wharf Street saw one person had been hospitalised and police said they were surprised the driver was able to walk away from the accident.
Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George told motorists: "Slow down. Drive to the conditions. Don't crash."
He also urged people not to 'rubber neck' at crash scenes.
"Driver inattention poses a substantial risk to emergency services personnel involved in the crash scene management."
