KEY POINTS:
The Transport Agency is defending its new toll road north of Auckland, despite another weekend of long tailbacks.
Traffic was again backed up on State Highway 1 at the Northern Gateway toll road yesterday. At one point, queues of up to 17 kilometres were reported. However, spokesman Wayne McDonald says the new road is working well.
"The buildup that's been experienced wasn't because of the toll road. It's performed marvelously. It has been because of the activity in and around Warkworth. This has been a very special weekend because we've had Waitangi Day associated with a Saturday and Sunday."
Mr McDonald is urging drivers to use the alternative route through State Highway 16.
