Cyclists suspect Transit NZ of stalling against calls for the Auckland Harbour Bridge to be opened to them and pedestrians.
The highways agency has confirmed the feasibility of adding a cycleway to one edge of the bridge, and a footpath. But Cycle Action Auckland is concerned Transit wants to wait for the result of a study on a new Waitemata Harbour crossing before committing itself.
Transit regional manager Peter Spies has told Auckland Regional Council his organisation expects proposed bridge-strengthening to include work needed to allow a pedestrian-cycle facility to be built in the future."
