Motorists using State Highway 1 north of Wellington have been advised to carry food and drink "to avoid fatigue and dehydration" due to long delays.
Transit New Zealand apologised yesterday for extensive delays caused by resealing works south of Waikanae that angered thousands of motorists this week, The Dominion Post reported.
Traffic was held up for up to 3 1/2 hours in peak afternoon traffic during the past two days.
Transit's operational manager, central zones, Mark Owen apologised for the inconvenience and the lack of notification.
Mr Owen advised motorists to carry provisions to counter the high temperatures along the coast.
But Kapiti regional councillor Chris Turver has called the advice "absolutely bizarre".
"I thought we had got past the days when we had to carry our picnic baskets when we travelled anywhere."
