Over the years Whiteman has transformed the former 'do-up' into a stylish waterfront home, on an 812 square metre section. And Whiteman says he's glad he didn't listen to the naysayers back in 1974.

Within days of its appearance in the Wall Street Journal, the property is already attracting international interest.
Whiteman says the home, nestled at the north-western end of the township, has been a holiday bolthole that has offered years of happy memories.
It also has some of the most stunning views across to Waitangi from the lounge and decks.
"It's got a wonderful factor when you walk in the back door and look out the front, you're looking out at the whole bay."
And being so close to the water's edge, Whiteman had also enjoyed many hours with rod in hand ever hopeful of landing a prize catch.
"I had a launch for many years and spent a lot of time game fishing and fishing in general."
Luxury Real Estate agent Charlie Brendon-Cook described the Wellington St property as having one of the most intimate water views on the Russell side of the Bay of Islands' inlet.
The home had been architecturally renovated with a high level of finish and fixtures and included an internal lift.
There was also a self-contained unit on the second floor for guest accommodation.
The Wall Street Journal added the property had "180-degree vistas" and the shoreline was just 50 metres from the house's front door.
Whiteman, who had been living there for the past five years, is planning to return to Whangarei.
