The Department of Conservation (DoC) is warning trampers to delay plans to travel in alpine areas because of the avalanche risk fluctuating between high and extreme.
Weather conditions in Fiordland National Park last week resulted in the Milford Road being closed three times for avalanche control work.
The weather forecast for this week is expected to further add to this risk.
A spokesperson for DoC said the closure of the Milford Road due to avalanche hazard was a clear indication of the risk which existed in the park due to the large accumulation of snow.
DoC has recommended people delay plans to tramp in alpine areas and on sections of tracks which sit below avalanche paths.
Trampers were advised to contact the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre before planning a trip.
