KEY POINTS:
Police are attempting to identify the body of a tramper found in the Spencer Mountains near Greymouth last night.
Sergeant Barry Hansen of the Christchurch police communications centre said the man was found by the Greymouth rescue helicopter about 9pm yesterday.
The helicopter was responding to a beacon activated above Lewis Pass about 7pm.
The man is believed to have been travelling with at least one other person who is still being sought.
Police are trying to establish the cause of death of the tramper.
