Police have named a Dunedin man who died after a tramping accident in Mount Aspiring National Park on Saturday.
Expatriate Australian Karl Walter Quaass, 30, died after falling 30 to 40 metres off the side of a mountain in the park.
Mr Quaass had been tramping with a group of nine friends, all from Dunedin. They were taking a known but unmarked route over the Wilmot Saddle beside Sisyphus Peak, when the inexperienced tramper slipped, fell and banged his head many times.
His friends climbed down to reach him, and administered CPR for 30 minutes, but were unable to revive him, Wanaka police Search and Rescue (SAR) co-ordinator Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said.
Three people left to seek help while the others stayed with the man's body.
Mr Quaass' parents would take their son's body back to Adelaide, South Australia, Mr Nicholson said.
Mr Quaass had lived in Dunedin for three years. His partner was part of the tramping group.
