KEY POINTS:
For Aucklanders, the Oxfam Water For Survival Nihotupu Tramline Walk is a stroll in the park, but for developing countries, it is a small but significant contribution towards saving thousands of lives.
The 20th anniversary of the event will be held next Sunday in the Waitakere Ranges.
A small admission fee goes towards water and waste-water treatment facilities in some of the world's poorest and drought-stricken places, to help save families from water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery.
Chloe Powell, of Oxfam, said much of the organisation's work in the Pacific focuses on water and sanitation.
The UN Development Report for 2007-08 says, for example, that almost two-thirds of the Papua New Guinea population doesn't have access to safe drinking water.
This puts them on a par with sub-Saharan Africa, said Ms Powell.
The entire Tramline trail in the Waitakere Ranges is open to the public only once a year, and this year there is an environmental focus. Participants are urged to carpool and will receive kinetic torches for their efforts.
