Test trains have arrived at Onehunga's new rail station.
"We've been waiting for such a long time that you get a bit of a rush when you see them," said Onehunga Business Association general manager Amanda Kinzett.
Train whistles could be heard by shoppers on Onehunga Mall, she said, adding to the excitement about the resumption of passenger services after 37 years.
Passenger trains will start running on September 19.
About 50 services will run between 6.15am and 10pm, half-hourly at peak times and hourly at weekends.
