Crack Opaki galloper Fritzy Boy will have his next race early in the new year but just where it will be is still to be decided.
Co-owner and trainer Alby MacGregor has been giving thought to lining him up in the group one Telegraph Handicap (1200m) at Trentham on January 23 but says starts at the Marton meeting at Awapuni and at the Woodville meeting at Woodville earlier that month are also being considered.
"Right now all I can say is he will go one of those three ways, which one I can't guarantee," MacGregor told the Times-Age yesterday. "We've still got a bit of thinking to do."
In terms of financial gain the Telegraph would be the obvious choice but Fritzy Boy has seldom shown his best form at Trentham and MacGregor isn't convinced the straight six suits his style of racing.
"We've started him a few times at Trentham and expected him to run well and more often than not he has disappointed ... maybe it's just not the track for him."
That Fritzy Boy is fit and ready for whatever task is set him next cannot be argued, however, after his impressive victory in the group three Higgins Challenge Stakes over 1400m at the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting at Awapuni last Saturday.
The Brilliance 6-year-old was scoring his 11th win from 37 starts and he took his total stake earnings to $663,300 under an astute ride from David Walker. He had him in second place on the rails before kicking him clear on the turn to win comfortably by of a length from star 3-year-old Cellarmaster and last year's winner O'Cartier.
MacGregor was not the least surprised with the latest success, saying that once the track had been downgraded to heavy he was always confident Fritzy Boy would handle it better than most of his rivals.
"There's never been any doubt he prefers the sting out of the ground, he's not so happy when it's firm."
Fritzy Boy is not the only member of the MacGregor team which has been racing well of late, with the trainer expecting bold efforts from improving filly Reremoana and promising Jungle Talk at Awapuni this Sunday.
Reremoana ran a good third at her last start at Trentham, while Jungle Talk was fourth at his latest appearance and MacGregor says they have trained on well enough since those assignnments to suggest they should both be leading chances for Boxing Day spoils.
